To new SharePoint users, uploading a file to the SharePoint document library may seem like a daunting and confusing task. This may simply be because there are in fact multiple ways of accomplishing this. The SharePoint Document Library is a common place to share and store documents, spreadsheets, files, etc. Those who are new to the term ‘SharePoint Document Library’; the ‘Share Documents’ in SharePoint is called “Document Library’ or ‘Content Library’.

List of methods to uploading files to SharePoint Document Library

Method 1 : Uploading documents via a web browser.
This is the simplest and most commonly used method for uploading files.
- Click on the ‘Upload’ button in the ‘Document’ ribbon under ‘Library Tools’.
- In the dialog box, select the path of the file.
- Give the name by which you would want to store the file in the library. Here you can provide other details.
It’s that simple! SharePoint event supports the ability to upload multiple documents in this way.

Method 2: Uploading documents via network places.
This is slightly different in Windows XP and Windows 7.
In Windows XP
- From the ‘Start’ menu, select ‘My Network Places’ after logging in.
- Select ‘Add a network place’.
- Create a network place by completing the ‘Add Network Place Wizard’.
- When asked about the address in the wizard, give the path to the ‘SharePoint Document Library.’
- You can now easily share your documents from your local computer using ‘Network Drives’.
In Windows 7
- Click ‘Windows’ button and go to ‘Computer’.
- Right-click on the ‘Computer’ window and select ‘Add a network location’.
- Create a network place by completing the ‘Add Network Place Wizard’.
- When asked about the internet/network address in the wizard, give the path to the ‘SharePoint Document Library.’

Method 3: Uploading documents via mapped drives.
This method is very similar to method 2.
In Windows XP
- Go to ‘My Computer’ and right-click in the window. Select ‘Map Network Drive’
- Create a network drive by following steps in the Wizard.
In Windows 7
- Go to ‘Computer’ and right-click in the window to select ‘Map Network Drive’
- Select the ‘Drive’ as you proceed further.
- Select the folder and browse through the path to ‘SharePoint Document Library’ or ‘SharePoint Site’, whichever suits your requirement.
- It is recommended to check the box ‘Reconnect at logon’
- Upon expanding the new drive, you will have access to SharePoint resources.

Method 4: Uploading documents via Email.
- Set up your SharePoint to receive emails.
- Go to SharePoint settings menu; click ‘Document Library Settings’.
- Check the List Information next to e-mail addresses to check if the library is enabled to receive e-mails.
- If not, check if the email address added to the SharePoint group. The SharePoint group address may contain the addresses of libraries. When you send an e-mail to the group members the attachments to the message are automatically added to your site.
- Once the settings are in place, you can upload documents to the libraries via email.
By using the above methods, SharePoint users can easily store and share documents. For SharePoint developers, there are many other ways to bulk upload files to the SharePoint document Library by using web services, C#, and so on.
